Project Background:
In August 2024, Higntek participated in the LED module development project for the Fairmont Century Plaza Hotel residential lighting application in Century City, California. The project was designed by HLB Lighting Design and focused on upgrading lighting solutions for guest rooms, corridors, lounge areas, and luxury residential spaces within the hotel environment.
Unlike standard commercial lighting projects where brightness and efficiency are usually the primary evaluation criteria, hospitality lighting requires a much deeper understanding of how light interacts with materials, architecture, and human perception. For this project, the objective was not simply to develop a brighter downlight module. The real challenge was creating a compact LED solution that could reproduce natural colors, maintain visual comfort during long periods of use, and support the premium atmosphere expected from a luxury hotel environment.
Customer Needs:
This project involved a collaboration between the hotel operator and the lighting design team, aiming to create a more refined lighting environment. A common challenge in high-end hotel projects is that while many standard LED modules can achieve sufficient brightness, they often fail to provide the light quality expected in upscale venues.
In discussions with the project team, we discovered their primary expectations went beyond lumen output. They needed an LED lighting module that provided both efficient lighting and high color rendering:
Natural color reproduction of interior materials:
Hotel residential spaces extensively utilize wooden furniture, stone, metal accents, and artwork. Therefore, the LED light source must possess high color rendering capabilities. Client requirements:
- CRI ≥ 90.
- SDCM ≤ 3.
Ensuring color consistency within the same space; no significant color difference between different batches of luminaires.
Avoiding visual fatigue associated with traditional downlights:
Traditional high-brightness downlights are prone to excessively high center brightness, dark edges, and strong glare. This reduces comfort in hotel guest rooms and rest areas. Therefore, the client focused not only on lumen output but also on the softness and uniformity of the light.
High efficiency and long-term operating costs:
Hotels operate in environments that last for extended periods. Lighting fixtures operate for extended periods daily, so customers want to reduce long-term energy consumption while maintaining lighting quality.
Engineering Challenges.
Balancing High CRI Performance and Efficiency.
One of the first technical challenges was achieving high color quality without sacrificing efficiency. The customer required:
- CRI ≥90;
- SDCM ≤3;
- luminous efficacy around 180 lm/W.
In general, improving color rendering — especially maintaining natural warm tones — usually reduces efficiency because more spectral energy is allocated to color quality.
From our experience, selecting the LED package is critical. A low-quality high-CRI solution may meet the CRI specification but create unnecessary efficiency loss and thermal pressure. Therefore, we selected Cree J Series PRO9 2835 LEDs, which provided a strong balance between:
- color accuracy;
- luminous output;
- reliability.
Compact Size with High Light Output.
Another challenge came from the physical limitation of the downlight structure. The LED module needed to fit existing fixture designs, which meant we had very limited space for:
- LED placement;
- thermal dissipation;
- electrical routing.
In this type of project, adding more LEDs is usually the easiest way to increase brightness. However, experienced engineers know this approach creates new problems:
more LEDs → more heat → higher thermal density → potential lifetime and color stability issues.
Therefore, our approach was not simply increasing LED quantity, but optimizing the entire module system.
Maintaining Color Consistency Across Hotel Spaces.
Large hospitality projects usually contain hundreds or even thousands of lighting fixtures. A small color difference between fixtures may not be obvious in a single room, but becomes noticeable across:
- corridors;
- public areas;
- repeated guest rooms.
For this reason, SDCM control was an important requirement. The target was: SDCM ≤3. To maintain consistent visual quality throughout the project.
Higntek's Solutions:
Based on luminaire requirements and lighting objectives, we developed two custom LED module sizes for different downlight structures. Instead of designing a single, universal circuit board, we designed each module according to the optical space and power requirements of the luminaire. Our design philosophy is to achieve a high-quality hotel lighting experience within limited space through optimized light source selection, electrical design, and thermal management.
Two custom LED module sizes are available.
Based on different downlight specifications, we developed: R55mm modules / R92mm modules. Both sizes utilize a 1.0mm thick high thermal conductivity aluminum-based PCB to meet the needs of different luminaire structures.

LED Selection and Optical Optimization.
The LED source adopted: Cree J Series PRO9 2835 LED. The reason we selected this LED was not simply because of brand recognition. During development, we evaluated the balance between:
- CRI performance;
- luminous efficiency;
- thermal behavior;
- long-term reliability.
For hospitality applications, we believe a good LED solution is not defined by maximum brightness, but by maintaining stable quality over years of operation.
Driver Compatibility and Dimming Design.
This project required flexible brightness adjustment based on different spaces. Therefore, our designed modules can be used with a “120-277V AC input constant current drive system” component. The lighting output can be adjusted according to different environments (guest rooms/corridors/rest areas/residential areas) via an external current adjustment switch. This allows lighting designers greater flexibility without needing to modify the LED module structure.
Project Results:
After prototype verification, the developed module met the performance targets required by the project’s lighting design team. The most important feedback was not only the measured lumen output, but also the overall lighting quality within the luminaire. The final delivered module:
- High color rendering index (CRI) light sources contribute to a more natural spatial presentation, making furniture colors more realistic, material textures richer, and artistic decorations more naturally rendered.
- Through reasonable LED layout and optical matching, noticeable light spots and dark areas are reduced.
- High-quality LED chips and stable electrical design help the client reduce replacement frequency and subsequent maintenance costs.

Reflecting on this project, one of the most important lessons learned is that high-end hotel lighting issues cannot be solved simply by improving a single specification. Higher lumen values do not necessarily mean better lighting effects. Successful hotel lighting solutions require a proper balance in the following aspects:
Visual comfort/Color quality/Efficiency/Thermal reliability/Long-term stability.
